High Streamflow Advisory - Somass River (DOWNGRADED)
ISSUED: November 28, 2017 10:30 AM
The River Forecast Centre is downgrading to a High Streamflow Advisory for:
- Somass River including Sproat River, Ash River and tributaries
Precipitation amounts observed across the Somass River watershed over the past day have been in the 5-35 mm range. Cooling temperatures decreased the runoff response on the Somass River overnight, with precipitation falling as snow at higher elevations. River levels have eased since the weekend’s high flows, with a current estimated rate of 600 m3/s on the Somass River (below a 2-year return period flow). Additional precipitation is expected through the week. Flows on the Somass River are forecast to remain stable through the week, with small rises possible. A return to levels experienced this past weekend is not expected at this time.
The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and update this advisory as conditions warrant.
A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
A Flood Watch means that river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.
A Flood Warning means that river levels have exceeded bankfull or will exceed bankfull imminently, and that flooding of areas adjacent to the rivers affected will result.
